One of the core responsibilities of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is boater safety. Every year, many recreational boaters are injured or killed. Yet many of these unfortunate events could have been prevented.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary has a proud traditions of presenting the general public the very best in boater safety through education. If you have never taken a boater safety class, please consider investing your time. It may very well save your life.


Courses

The Maryland law states that anyone born on or after July 1, 1972, must have a certificate of boating safety education while operating any motorized vessel. This certificate must be with the operator of the boat at all times. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary offers boater safety classesCoastie in which upon graduation will provide a certificate meeting the state's requirements.

All U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary courses provide instruction to boaters at all levels, from the fundamental to the advanced. Our courses are taught by experienced and knowledgeable instructors committed to the highest standards of the United States Coast Guard.

Many insurance companies will offer discounts on boat insurance to individuals who successfully complete this course. Individuals who successfully complete the course and exam are awarded certificates and cards.

The Boater Safety and Seamanship Class offered locally entails a total of a 32 hour course.  New classes will starting soon, Please contact the flotilla near you if interested.  Some of the topics following are covered in this course: Finding the right boat for you, knowing the rules of the water, boating equipment, trailering your boat, introduction to navigation, powering your boat, weather, lines & knots, and much more.
